Spare Tyre Festival

Press Release
Spare Tyre Festival at New Diorama Theatre

A festival to celebrate Spare Tyre's broad range of inclusive theatre will take place at the New Diorama Theatre in Camden at the end of October. The Spare Tyre Festival will showcase Spare Tyre's current pioneering work with adults with learning disabilities, older people and emerging community artists.

Spare Tyre's history of producing bold and powerful theatre began in 1979 and when a group of women wrote and performed a play about their personal experiences of body image. Spare Tyre is still remembered for this work and the company is incredibly proud of its history.

Since its feminist beginnings the company has created dozens of theatre productions with different communities based upon harnessing, capturing and valuing life experience.  For the past 10 years Spare Tyre has worked on a long-term projects, nurturing creative skills and enabling individuals and communities to flourish.

The Spare Tyre Festival, which is taking place in partnership with the New Diorama Theatre, will feature three events, kicking off with I'm an Artist, let me in!  This is a show devised and performed by Artists from inc.Theatre Ensemble who are Spare Tyre's company of Artists with learning disabilities. It showcases five pieces of work including murder mystery, dance, intimate theatre, comedy, magic, and audio drama.  This will be followed by SAFE performed by HotPots, Spare Tyre's company of Artists aged 60+.  SAFE is a comedy satirising stringent and often nonsensical safeguarding regulations and how they can limit the freedom of older people.

The Spare Tyre Festival will also include the Spare Tyre Masterclass: Nurturing the Creative Impulse led by Spare Tyre Associate Artist, Isaac Ngugi.  The masterclass will enable Spare Tyre to share the company's practice and methods of unlocking creativity when working with diverse communities and established with emerging practitioners and artists.

Arti Prashar, Spare Tyre's Artistic Director / CEO says 'The festival is a very exciting event for us.  To be in such a vibrant central venue will allow us to reach the range of audiences that our performers deserve, and also raise awareness of the breadth of Spare Tyre's work.
